We visited on salmon fest day in mid November. There were large Chum salmon in the river and there were numerous large fish. We saw some that were dead after spawning, but most were swimming and mating. Great place to take the kids out for a memorable experience. I had my dog who is not very well behaved, but because the trails are well laid out the dog could not get after the salmon.
I wouldn't suggest this as an early morning or an evening spot because I've seen some characters around who have made me nervous. And, I've heard rumors of dead bodies and the like, which wouldn't surprise me. It's lush, though, and one of my favorite spots in the city. I would spend every afternoon there, if I could.
What a great park! It is truly one of Seattle's gems. It really has it all: hiking trails, playgrounds, barbecue grills, shelters for rent, beach access, trains, an old and still active fruit and nut orchard, a creek where salmon spawn and multiple grassy meadows. Our family loves it! Parking can be tricky during low tides, which are amazing, or on really nice summer days. Park at one of the many trail heads if your willing to hike in. The path is fairly easy and beautiful.
I love this park! There are beautiful trails with native plants, a fun playground, and an awesome beach that has the right kind of culverts for salmon to use to return to their spawning ground. Watching the salmon run in the fall is magical!
I've loved this park since I was a child playing on the playground, now I'm taking my child to play there. Going there with friends to have a chill session at the beach is great. Kid friendly, but it's rocky and a lot of seaweed.
